Seealpsee

Seealpsee, Switzerland

Seealpsee means "Lake of the alp by the lake."  My son and his family took me on a European road trip that included 9 countries, including Switzerland, in May of 2024.  One of our adventures while in Switzerland included Seealpsee, a beautiful lake in Switzerland.  The lake is not very big, but has a beautiful backdrop of the Swiss Alps.

My daughter-in-law wanted to hike the loop trail down to the lake, but our trip didn't quite work out that way because of the remaining snow and ice on the trail.  We started in Wasserauen and took the cable car up to Ebenalp, which is the northernmost summit in the Appenzell Alps.  We tried to hike the loop trail to Seealpsee, and we were able to see the beautiful lake from above, high in the mountains.  But when we reached the summit, we ran into a hiker with her dog who strongly advised us not to continue, especially with children.  She said it would be far too dangerous.  We had already hiked through ice and snow and were hesitant to turn around and hike back through it, but not knowing if we'd even make it on the full loop, we decided we'd better turn around.  So we hiked back down to the cable car, rode back to Wasserauen, and then hiked in to the lake from there.

The hike to the lake was definitely a work-out -- uphill most of the way!

Here is a website for the cable car:

Here is a video of our ride up and down the cable car & of our eventual arrival at Seealpsee:

This woman and her dog convinced us to turn around, that the conditions further on were too dangerous in the ice and snow for small children

This photo doesn't do justice how steep this hike is.  Be prepared for some serious calf-burn!
