The Louvre

Musee du Louvre

The Louvre Museum is one of the definite MUSTS when visiting Paris.  It is the world's most famous museum and the most visited museum in the world.  It is open every day except Tuesdays.  Tickets cost 22 euro and you can purchase and schedule them on the Louvre's official website here:  Louvre

The most famous artwork inside the Louvre is the Mona Lisa.  Leonardo Davinci worked on the painting until he died in 1519.  The Louvre is currently located in room 711 of the Denon Wing, although I've heard rumors of it being moved somewhere else.  Currently it is almost the only artwork in the room and it is always crowded with people trying to snap a photo of it.  You can't get anywhere close to it - it is roped off.  The Mona Lisa is quite a bit smaller than I expected.  It is only 30 inches high and 21 inches wide.

There are many other famous pieces of art inside the Louvre Museum, and it would take a week to view and enjoy all of them.  We visited the Louvre in November of 2024 and also in March of 2025.  I saw a few of the highlights while we were there, especially in the Denon Wing.  The Louvre is located at 75001 in Paris.

You can take the metro to the Louvre by getting off at the Palais Royal exit on lines 1 or 7.

There are a lot of bridges that cross the Seine River towards the Louvre.  This is one of the entrances to the Louvre complex

This tunnel will take you to the famous pyramid of the Louvre

And there's the pyramid!

The main courtyard of the Louvre

The pyramid is the main entrance to the Louvre.  It was designed by I.M. Pei

The Louvre Pyramid was completed in 1989.  It was created to provide a new entrance to the museum that would make it easier for visitors to access all 3 wings of the Louvre museum.
There are a lot of these concrete blocks that people stand on to take their photos with the pyramid and museum behind them.

You can get pretty close to the pyramid for photos

The arch is called the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel

This statue is of Louis XIV

The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

The Mona Lisa is located in the Denon Wing and is protected behind glass and behind a roped area

There is a huge group of spectators admiring the Mona Lisa at all times.  The first thing that struck me about the Mona Lisa is that she is a lot smaller than I expected.  She is 30" high and 20.8" wide.

The Mona Lisa was created by Leonard Davinci in 1503.  He was commissioned to paint it by an Italian who wanted a painting of his wife Lisa.  It is now the most famous painting in the world.  The Mona Lisa is usually in the Denon Wing of the Louvre, but is being temporarily displayed in the Galerie Medicis until October 2025.  This is in the Richelieu Wing, in room 801 on level 2.

The Wedding Feast at Cana

The Wedding Feast at Cana was painted in 1563 by Paolo Veronese.  It was housed in the same room as the Mona Lisa, but the Mona Lisa has been temporarily moved while renovations are performed on the Louvre.

It was acquired by Napoleon's troops in 1797 and has remained in France since that time.

Places to Eat Near the Louvre

We found a really great restaurant only minutes away from the Louvre.  La Fregate is located at 1 Rue du Bac, 75007 in Paris.  It does not have an official website.

This was our view at this table by the window

All of their food was fantastic, but especially this crepe
