Lyme Park in 2024 |
When planning our England road trip in November 2024, visiting both of the Pemberley's from Pride & Prejudice were a definite must! The 1995 A&E version of Pride & Prejudice is my favorite, so Lyme Park was at the top of my list. There were so many beautiful scenes at Lyme Park that walking those beautiful grounds was an opportunity of a lifetime!
Unfortunately, our visit would take place during November, when the house is closed while they decorate for Christmas. Sadly, we visited only one day before the house opened all decorated for Christmas! The employees were arriving to tour the house and see it decorated beautifully, so my husband asked if there was any way that we, or at least I, could also see the house. The employee almost let us in, but then was afraid she might get in trouble so she said she'd better not. I was very sad not to be able to see inside, but I was able to be in the courtyard, which is where the gift shop entrance is, and I was able to walk all around the grounds and see all the beautiful views that Mr. Darcy and Lizzy enjoyed in the movie. A choir was singing in the courtyard while we were there. I enjoyed shopping in the gift shop, and bought my daughters a Pride & Prejudice book, even though they already have multiple versions of the book -- but this one was purchased at Pemberley!
Lyme Park's official website is here:
Lyme Park The house is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The garden opens at 10:30, and the park and car park at 8:30. Remember that the house closes in November! Look at their website for other closings, such as the week between Christmas & New Year's. Tickets that include a visit to the house are 18.70 euro. Lyme Park is only a 45 minute drive from Chatsworth House, which is Pemberley from the 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie starring Keira Knightley. We visited Chatsworth House right before coming to Lyme Park.
The home at Lyme Park was built in the 1500's. The land belonged to the Legh family for 600 years. In 1939 when the war made it impossible to maintain the house, the National Trust became the caretakers of the property. Their address is Disley, Stockport, Cheshire, SK12 2NR. Here is their google maps location:

Here are photos from the 1995 Pride & Prejudice movie from scenes at Lyme Park:

Mr. Darcy approaching the pond where he took a swim before approaching the house. This is not the pond right beside the house. There is another pond up on the hill. |

Here are some scenes at Pemberley - in this scene, I love seeing Lyme Park come into view and Lizzy admiring the house. I stood in that very spot and admired it like she did.
This is the scene where Mr. Darcy comes back home and swims in the lake before heading into the house.
And this is the scene where Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth see each other, and he shows her and the Gardiners around Pemberley grounds.
