Giotto's Bell Tower on Piazza del Duomo
Giotto's Bell Tower was completed in 1359. Giotto di Bondone began the tower in 1334 and was followed by Andrea Pisano after his death in 1337. It was completed by Francesco Talenti after the Black Plague halted work on the tower. It is 278 feet high and includes 414 steps. There are 3 terraces along the climb to the summit, so you have 3 chances to rest on your climb and enjoy the beautiful views of Florence in all directions. You can watch a video of our bell tower climb here: Giotto's Bell Tower
The official website to purchase tickets to climb the bell tower, as well as the Duomo, and visit other sites on Piazza del Duomo is here: Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore
Hours for the Piazza del Duomo:
Dome: 8:15 a.m. -- 6:45 p.m.
Giotto's bell tower: 8:15 a.m. -- 6:45 p.m.
Baptistery: 8:30 a.m. -- 7:30 p.m.
Duomo Museum: 8:30 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m.
Basilica of Santa Reparata: 10:45 a.m. -- 4 p.m.
Cathedral: 10:15 a.m. -- 3:45 p.m.
Every first Tuesday of the month the museum is closed. I very highly recommend purchasing a Brunelleschi Pass because it includes access to everything, including climbing the dome. The Brunelleschi Pass costs 30 euro.

The bell tower is only steps away from the cathedral, and from the baptistery as well. Those climbing the tower use the same stairs as those descending the tower, so it can be a tight squeeze at times when people are passing each other. It is also enclosed, except for on the 3 terraces and the summit, so if you are claustrophobic you might want to keep that in mind.
